Students, staff and Governors from Rutherford School reached the top 50 in the National School Song Competition with their original composition “Hand in Hand”.
It was an exciting venture that involved all the students and staff coming up with lyrics and melodies to create a wonderful final composition.
With St Antony’s Catholic Primary taking the top spot, the National School Song was established to raise awareness and funds for the charity Grief Encounter who support bereaved children and young people. Organised by The School Vision, they are dedicated to giving students across all schools the opportunity to create music and words through song or poetry.
For Rutherford students, it was a project that highlighted the term’s topic theme of ‘sharing is caring’ and brought together their community of students, staff and Governors.
Music therapist at Rutherford School, Sarah Kong, said: “We use music therapy for our students to build communication, confidence and self-expression skills. For some students using instruments can also promote independent movement too. Music therapy has an important role in the specialised curriculum here at Rutherford. The National School Song competition had the added benefit of bringing our whole school community together too”.
Rutherford reached the top 50 out of over a thousand entries across the country.
