What is PMLD?

People with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) have more than one disability. These may entail profound developmental delay, learning difficulties, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, mental and health problems as well as Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Due to the severity of these disabilities and complex medical health needs, people with PMLD often need a lot of support and assistance. Like everybody, each person is an individual and will have different needs.

PMLD can have a significant impact on communication however, there are a number of ways to communicate other than using spoken language and each individual has their own way of expressing themselves. For example: facial expressions, body movements, using noises, change in behaviour, and using speech, objects, signs and symbols.
